Dendropanax morbiferus is a tree native to Korea. Its name shares a root with Panax — the same word behind Korean ginseng, meaning "all-healing." Legend holds that the elixir of immortality sought by China's first emperor was Dendropanax, and it stood among the highest tribute items sent abroad.

Golden paint · Hwangchil
The tree that heals itself.
The Korean name Hwangchil means "golden paint." Score the bark and a golden sap rises — once used in place of gold on the finest handicrafts. That sap carries an essential oil, benzoin (Ansilhyang), that the tree secretes to close and heal its own wounds. The same compound is what quiets an overexcited nervous system.
